“The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans”
“The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans” is a one-man presentation and performance that honors Black freedom fighters and veterans with North Carolina connections who have struggled for freedom, liberty, and equality for more than 400 years. Their sacrifices, resistance, and resilience have contributed to American democracy, even as they were denied full citizenship rights. By listening to their stories in this production, we can gain a deeper understanding of our nation’s founding ideals and draw hope to continue the work of making those ideals a reality for all, together.
The show was written and is performed by Dr. Sonny Kelly, founder of Legacy Heirs Productions. The play’s development was commissioned and funded by the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources’ America 250 NC initiative and produced by Carolina K-12 at Carolina Public Humanities, UNC-Chapel Hill.

PopUp Protest
The daily barrage of news has us on edge, and we find ourselves wanting to fight back more and more. To make our voices heard, to peacefully protest, and to let our community and our government know we’re not going to take it anymore!
Our goal is simple: amplify our voices, increase our presence in the community, and show that Burke County stands for justice and democracy.
Bring a Friend: Strength is in numbers! These are short, high-energy demonstrations designed to be accessible and impactful.
Pro-Tip for Signs: Keep it short and bold. Drivers and passersby only have a few seconds to read your message. Think: "Liberty & Justice for ALL," "Defend Democracy," or "Neighbors Supporting Neighbors."
A Note on Messaging: In keeping with our values, we ask that all signs and chants remain respectful. No vulgarity. We want our message to be heard by everyone, and staying focused on our positive, principled goals is the best way to do that.
Safety First: To ensure everyone feels supported, each demonstration will have at least one designated Safety Captain on-site. They are there to help manage the flow of the event and keep our gathering peaceful and organized.
Know When and Where: Keep an eye on your email and our social media pages. Since these are "Pop-Ups," the locations will rotate to reach different parts of our county!

No Kings III
In 2025, millions of Americans came together in nonviolent protest to oppose the growing authoritarian actions of the Trump administration and affirm that this nation belongs to its people, not to kings. Since then, people have continued to rise up nonviolently against the Trump administration’s ongoing brutality and abuses of power, including the latest escalation in Minnesota.

Staying Grounded When Things Get Heated
This 90-minute workshop is for people who want to stay steady and think clearly when situations get tense, confusing, or emotionally charged. Whether you’re dealing with difficult conversations, uncertainty, strong opinions, or moments that test your patience, this session focuses on practical skills that help you keep your footing.
Rather than debating issues or replaying stressful scenarios, we’ll work on inner skills that matter across many parts of life: noticing when stress is starting to take over, staying present with strong reactions without acting on them right away, and becoming less easily pulled into other people’s emotions or behavior. The aim is not to suppress feelings, but to create enough internal space to respond deliberately instead of automatically.
There is no role-play and no discussion of specific conflicts. You’re welcome to participate actively or simply listen. This is not therapy or action training. It’s a practical session focused on building calm clear-headedness you can draw on in everyday situations — at work, in community life, and at home.
